USB-C external NVMe SSD drive
Question - Will my USB-C external NVMe SSD disconnect when switching between PC and Mac?
Currently, I have an external NVMe SSD on my Mac Studio as the home folder and a USB-A drive for backups. I have the HKS0201A2U HDMI KVM Switch with 2 LG Ultrafine 27" monitors connected to a Mac Studio and Mini PC.
Thank you!

Dear Ralph Brown,
Thank you for reaching out with your question regarding the HKS0201A2U HDMI KVM Switch and your USB-C NVMe SSD setup.
Based on the specifications of the HKS0201A2U KVM Switch, its USB 2.0 ports are primarily designed for low-bandwidth peripherals (e.g., barcode scanners or printers). While it supports USB 2.0 connectivity, it may not reliably maintain a stable connection with high-speed storage devices like an NVMe SSD, especially when switching between your Mac Studio and Mini PC.
Reason as follow:
1. Potential Disconnection: When switching inputs, the KVM may temporarily reset the USB connection, which could cause your NVMe SSD to disconnect and require re-mounting. This could interrupt workflows, particularly if the SSD is set as your Mac's home directory.
2. Bandwidth Limitations: USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) is significantly slower than USB-C NVMe SSD speeds (often 10+ Gbps), which may lead to performance bottlenecks.
Recommended Solutions:
1. Direct Connection: For optimal stability, connect the NVMe SSD directly to your Mac Studio’s USB-C port (bypassing the KVM).
2. Alternative KVM: If seamless storage switching is critical, consider a KVM with USB 3.0/3.1 support (or Thunderbolt KVMs for Mac/PC setups).
3. Network Storage: For shared access, a NAS or cloud-based home directory could be a workaround.Thank you for your understanding.
Best regards.
